What is the difference between Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Nutritionist or Health Coach?
This is a common question asked by many of my clients. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) receives extensive training both in the classroom and out in the field. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are formally trained to approach all conditions using an evidence based approach, utilizing proven research outcomes to treat or prevent illness or injury to the body. We are recognized and registered with the nationwide Commission of Dietetics proven that rigorous classroom and fieldwork requirements have been fulfilled to provide Medical Nutrition therapy to clients. All Registered Dietitians have completed 1200 hours of hands on internship training in addition to coursework at a four year university that is specific to nutritional science and have passed a comprehensive examination for all RDN’s in the nation. While in practice, Registered Dietitians must complete several hours of continuing education units to ensure the current standards are followed, in addition to adhering to a code of ethics. Generally, nutritionists or health coaches do not need to have formal training to earn their titles as the term is not yet regulated.
